Premier Ford: Today we're visiting BWXT, a company on the cutting edge of nuclear power and technology. We're here in Cambridge to find out how steam generators are made for nuclear reactors.

Premier Ford: As Ontario continues to grow, we need more ways to provide families and industries with clean, reliable, low-cost power. BWXT supports our current and future electricity supply goals by manufacturing nuclear reactor technology. Some of these reactors can supply enough electricity to power over 300,000 homes. What can you tell me about BWXT?

Emmerson Peacock: We've been in the nuclear business for more than 60 years. We are leaders in the design of large components like pressure vessels, steam generators, heat exchangers and pressurizers. We are the only manufacturer of these components in North America.
Premier Ford: Show me how you make steam generators.

Richard Faucher: I'm taking you into North America’s largest clean room for nuclear component assembly. Here, we maintain strict controls for things that can impact the performance of a reactor.
Emmerson Peacock: First, we receive pieces of a large pressure vessel that we weld together into thick shells. Then the shells are prepped for the steam separators to be inserted. Next, thousands of water circulation tubes are seal-welded into place. Finally, the steam generators
are tested for integrity before shipping to the customer. Premier, you can help us inspect a completed steam generator by testing for cracks.
Premier Ford: Let's do it.
Richard Faucher: It starts with the application of a magnetic particle dust. Then a strong magnetic current is run through the generator. The dust will collect in any cracks or defects, then they can be addressed.
