How does Ontario distribute the rabies vaccine baits

[Title: Ask an Expert - How does Ontario distribute the rabies vaccine baits?]

Larissa: Welcome to the Ask an Expert series.

My name is Larissa Nituch and I’m a Science Operations Supervisor with the Province of Ontario.

The question is – How does Ontario distribute the rabies vaccine baits?

We distribute the ONRAB the oral rabies vaccine baits specifically targeting skunks, raccoons and foxes.

We distribute it by air especially when we want to cover a large area so rural areas and some of the larger green spaces.

And then when we want a little bit more precision in where we're putting the baits out we can either distribute them by hand or we use what are called bait stations which are essentially PVC tubes that we put in kind of areas of high animal traffic, fill those up with baits and then an animal can come along take a bait or two hopefully get vaccinated and then keep on moving.
